Madam Stoltz Retrodeco

The inspiration for the name Madam Stoltz comes from India – like so much else in the life of Pernille Stoltz. “The Indians are very polite and always call me” madam “. In 1995, when I was about to choose a name for my first business, Madam Stoltz was the first name in my head. Since then I have stayed with the name.

There was no big master plan behind Madam Stoltz. Instead, creativity, imagination and adventurism were the driving forces. In combination with a deep fascination with the Asian lifestyle and the ability to take advantage of the opportunities that constantly arise when you are on the move.

It all started in the early 1990s with a young Dane, Pernille Stoltz. To finance their Asian trip, Pernille buys jewelry at flea markets in India and sells it to tourists on the beaches of Greece.

After three years of travel and a lot of adventure, she returns to Denmark – full of ideas on how to develop her own craftwork with the help of some of the skilled Indian craftsmen she met on her journey.

In 1995, Pernille opened a small shop with hooks, baskets, candlesticks, jewelery and Indian saris in the Latin American district of Copenhagen. The shop has given Pernille the opportunity to travel to India frequently and make their creative ideas a reality. In 1997, Pernille began to sell to other lifestyle and gift shops in Denmark – and so the wholesale business was born by Madam Stoltz.

In 2002, Pernille and her husband Peter and their two young daughters decided to move to Pernille’s home island, Bornholm, in the middle of the Baltic Sea. The business now runs Madam Stoltz in a partnership. Pernille is the designer and responsible for the contact to the suppliers in India and China. Peter takes care of the logistics and the finances.

“I travel to India at least four times a year – and always return full of inspiration – India has become my second home”.

Madam Stoltz has 14 employees on Bornholm and the products are sold in stores across Europe.

Products
Nai Disha and Madam Stoltz have jointly developed a fair trade project. Young people over the age of 18, sell some products through the Madam Stoltz sales network. All sales are transferred to the Nai Disha project – so they stay for the teenagers and their families.

Since 2010, Madam Stoltz has supported NAI DISHA (New Direction) in New Delhi. A GNO nonprofit organization focused on development through education.

Nai Disha began as a school for very poor people 10 years ago, and thanks to Nai Disha, many children from the slums of New Delhi are no longer begging on the streets, but have had the opportunity to get an education.

The Nai Disha project now has 450 children and teenagers under its wings.

Contrasts between India and Denmark

“During my travels through India, I have seen and experienced the most terrible consequences of extreme poverty. With the support of the wonderful Nai Disha project, I am so happy to be able to give back the land that gave me so much, “explains Pernille. Pernille always visits Nai Disha when she’s in New Delhi.

inspiration
Pernille Stoltz has a longstanding and very close cooperation with the Indian suppliers who produce their designs. At least 4 times a year, she travels to the amazing India, a land of contrasts. These trips fill her with many impressions that are transformed back into ideas and developments when she returns to her family on Bornholm.

“The contrasts between India and Bornholm are enormous. India is a clash of all senses and I am very inspired by the ancient craft tradition of the Indians ”
